In 1968, it sank just off the coast of Wellington. Over fifty people died, making it one of the worst maritime disasters in New Zealand's history.Consequences following the Sinking of the Wahine First and most importantly lives were lost in the disaster, 51 to be correct. Many of the fatalties were of elderly people and young children who struggled to swim in the best of weather let alone rough seas.

She survived my Godfather by nearly 20 years and died 13 days after the 25th anniversary of the Wahine Disaster was commemorated in Wellington. A Canadian by birth, she was a remarkable person in her own right, but that is another story.
